Blank was
the Barrier
the Barrier
I’d been painting for 20 years but never felt like an artist—because I barely finished any paintings. Blank canvases kept getting in the way, until I realized the right starting point could change everything.
My grandfather was a gifted oil painter. He didn’t paint often—but when he did, it was magic. After he passed, we filled a gallery with his work to celebrate his life. I inherited his easel, his brushes, and the spark to keep going. I may not have his talent, but I like to think I make up for it with drive. To my fellow self-taught artists, for whatever reason you paint, I hope you find what works for you, and find ways to share your art with the world.
I never went to art school, but I knew I’d never improve without more reps. I didn’t want to start with apples and drawing exercises. I wanted to practice finishing paintings, then work my way back to the basics on my own terms.
People learn faster when they start by finishing something meaningful. Starting in the middle gives just enough challenge to feel proud—and enough progress to keep going. Painting a picture or coding a game builds confidence first, so the hard stuff doesn’t feel so hard down the road.
This isn’t cheating; it’s not a better way to paint; it's an alternative way to learn and practice. What matters most is showing up, finding joy, and getting better with every stroke. Just as they've helped me, I hope After's starter canvases help you paint more, build confidence and develop painting skills until you no longer need us.
