Products

Each underpainting ships as a rolled canvas. It's primed, printed and ready to paint with either acrylic or oil-based paint. In addition to the canvas, you'll receive a full-color reference to the original work (digital download) and links to some helpful tips for getting started.

You'll need your own paint, brushes, solvents/mediums and anything else you typically use to paint with. You'll also need a surface—an easel & board, or table—to tape up or temporarily affix your canvas.

After's underpaintings are for every artist looking to further their skills. If you've painted before and have your own supplies, chances are working through an afterpiece is right up your alley.

It's entirely up to you! You should expect about 75%-80% paint coverage with your first layer. We provide a tone comparison tool on each product page to help give a sense of how each tone may impact your final piece. If you're purchasing as a gift or are looking for additional guidance, we recommend the following as a rule of thumb:

  • Warm: Best for portraits and figures
  • Cool: Great for landscapes and animals
  • Vibrant: Ideal for still life and for pieces with thicker brushwork or impasto-style painting. Think: van Gogh.

Painting on rolled canvas is great for small studies and low-pressure pieces. Simply unroll, tape up to a board and treat it just like a pre-stretched canvas. If you're planning to stretch the canvas yourself, we recommend doing so before painting. If you're planning to mount the canvas to a board or panel, you can do so either before or after painting. In many cases we are happy to accommodate special requests. We can custom print canvases in most common sizes up to 45" x 60" including pre-stretched, 1.5" depth canvases. If you have a special request, please reach out to support@after-piece.com. Be sure to include the item name, desired size and shipping zip code so the team can provide you with the most accurate quote possible.

We add new underpaintings to our catalog each and every month. Check back often or subscribe to our mailing list (at the bottom of this page) to be notified of new collections and additions!

We're particular about our materials, too. Our underpaintings are printed on artist-grade, poly-cotton canvas. The minimum weight is 360 grams per square meter (GSM). The canvas is primed with acrylic gesso before printing. We use a giclee printing process to ensure archival quality, while allowing for optimal coverage with both acrylic and oil-based paints.

Shipping

All of After's canvases are made and printed in the U.S.A. Depending on capacity, your order will ship from one of our warehouses in California or Kentucky.

Your order will be processed and printed within 1-3 business days. Estimated delivery times vary based on the shipping method selected at checkout:

  • Standard Shipping: 7-10 business days
  • Expedited Shipping: 5-7 business days

We automatically send tracking information to the e-mail address associated with your order as it becomes available. Please make sure to check your spam folder if you do not receive any order or shipping confirmation emails from us.

Returns

If you made a mistake or wish to cancel your order, please contact us within 24 hours of placing your order. You can email us at support@after-piece.com with the subject "CANCEL ORDER:" followed by your order number.

Please note that if we have already processed your order or it has been sent to the carrier, we won't be able to cancel it and will have to handle as a return upon arrival.

To initiate a return, please get in touch with our customer support team at support@after-piece.com. Our team will assist you with the return process and provide further instructions. For additional details on returns, please review After's return policy.

So sorry—we work hard to protect your canvas and ensure accuracy with each order. If your canvas arrives damaged or there is a mistake with your order, please contact us at support@after-piece.com with clear photos of the damage, and we'll promptly arrange a free replacement.
