Getting Started Guide

Are you new to After or preparing to paint on a rolled canvas for the first time? Here are a few helpful tips to get you started.

What You'll Need:

  • Masking Tape
  • Board or Other Flat Surface
  • Easel & Paint Supplies
  • Reference Image

Step 1: Tape up the Canvas

Tape the canvas to your board or a flat surface, ensuring the surface is larger than your underpainting in both height and width. A drawing board works well, but plywood, foam board, or masonite are also great options.

Start by taping one side of the canvas. Once secured, run your hand across the canvas toward the top or bottom edge to smooth out any air bubbles, then tape that edge. Repeat this process for the remaining two sides, pulling the tape and canvas taut as you go.

Step 2: Set up your Area

With your canvas securely attached to your board or surface, you can position it upright on an easel or lay it flat on a desk or table. If you're using a reference image, consider taping it above or next to your canvas, or displaying it digitally on a phone, tablet, or computer. Set up your paint supplies as usual, and happy painting!

Other Helpful Tips:

  • Darker sections may require thicker paint or additional layers to achieve full coverage
  • Want a clean edge? Tape directly along the printed edges
  • No primer or gesso required. The canvas is primed before printing and arrives ready to paint
  • Prefer to mount or stretch your canvas before painting? Check out our Mounting & Framing Guide
  • Otherwise, paint as normal and have fun!
