In Kitchen, with the Artist’s Wife, Viggo Johansen captures his wife bathed in soft natural light as she works in a modest kitchen, the quiet ordinariness elevated into something intimate and reverent. The muted palette and gentle brushwork turn a daily chore into a scene of quiet dignity and warmth.

With the major shapes, values, and proportions already established, this block-in underpainting is ready for you to paint directly on top in oil or acrylic. Use this rolled starter canvas as a springboard to layer color, define your edges and bring the scene to life in your own style.

Tougher than it looks

This was definitely more challenging than I expected in a good way. Without having everything laid out for me, I had to really think about color, light, and brushwork and found myself branching out from my usual style.

It gave me just enough structure to get started, but still left plenty of room to work things out on my own. Working thin to thick with oil paint, I was able to make multiple passes over complex areas without completely loosing the underpainting which was great. Working with thinned paint (paint thinner) also didn't seem to impact the underpainting at all.

If you enjoy painting as a hobby and want to push yourself a bit or try a new style, this is definitely worth a try.

Turned out great!

I've always admired Vermeer but never thought I'd take on a copy. After gave me the confidence to try and it turned out great!

THICK Canvas

Canvas is very thick with a very smooth texture. Great quality. I enjoyed the guidance from the underpainting and was able to finish the 8x10 in just a few hours.

Really Nice

As someone who hates the drawing and underpainting stages of oil painting, I have to say it was really nice to just tape this up and get straight to painting. It was great for practice and will do again.
